Not all music is created equal

Not all music is created equal

04.09.09

We've hit that part of the year where industry awards start to feature large in the music industry calendar - awards are themselves strange things, for some they vindicate an artist's work and yet for others they are seen as an insiders group hug for a select few.

No matter what your view on awards and the recipients of said awards they do serve to further help promote and encourage more people to embrace our local music and musicians and that in itself is a wonderful thing.

Not all music is created equal.

Miho Wada - Piss Off (such a loser!)

Miho is a virtuouso flute and saxophone plater....whose talent was spotted by none other than Nigel Kennedy at the Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in 2003 - which then led her to perform jazz trio concerts with him in London and Malven.

She plays and sings a repertoire of her original songs and improvised music with Japanese flavors accompanied on Marimba, Guitars, Bass and Percussion/Drums, creating a cutting edge, contemporary world music sound.

You can catch her live this Friday in Auckland at 4:20 alongside Batucada Sound Machine, King Kapisi and Cherie Mathieson.

Thanks to Miho Piss Off (such a loser!) from her latest EP Traveling Bugs and Talking Shoes is free to you to download for a week from Sept 3rd.

Release of The Day
Dr. Colossus - Dr. Colossus

Cinematic and freewheeling, the evocative music of Dr Colossus weaves a vast web of sounds and references: a Tijuana knife fight, pistols at dawn on the steppes of Siberia, complex Balkan rhythms, yearning East-European melodies, warped electronica, rip-tide surf guitar, infectious beer-hall beats, '50s kitsch and a generous helping of skewed rock and twisted metal.

This their debut EP is like a train-load of flaming camels crashing head first in to a circus tent filled with knifethrowers and surf guitars somewhere behind the Iron Curtain.
