We may not be getting a public holiday this Waitangi but we do get them surcharges... KiwiFM aren't charging you more for less, rather this Waitangi Day they're giving over the afternoon to songs by New Zealand artists about New Zealand.
"Other radio stations can make an effort for Waitangi Day by highlighting New Zealand artists but only Kiwi FM would go further and devote an afternoon to songs actually about New Zealand", says Kiwi FM Programme Director, Michael Higgins.
The afternoon will cover five decades of music from Peter Lewis & The Tri-Sonic Beat's "Four City Rock" in 1959 to Minuit's "Aotearoa" in 2009.
"New Zealand music doesn't have to touch on New Zealand themes to succeed", says Michael Higgins, "and it doesn't always get it right when it tries to. There have been some overly self conscious failures in the past; but a great New Zealand song about a New Zealand subject is something special and we think playing some of them is a very fitting way to mark Waitangi Day".
Nice one.
I mentioned the passing of Pauly Fuemana earlier in the week and for those interested I suggest you read Graham Reid's moving piece about Pauly over at Public Address:
"There isn't a hip-hop, or pop, artists in this country -- unwittingly or otherwise -- who doesn't owe a debt of gratitude to Pauly Fuemana. He (and his late brother Phil) proved the impossible was within our grasp.
Some cynics will say Pauly only left one great song. But that is one more more than they and I -- and most of us -- will ever leave.
This is a sad day."
The comments are well worth your time reading as well.
Release Of The Day
Salon Kingsadore - Mountain Rescue
Salon Kingsadore's third and latest full-length release, Mountain Rescue.
The album features the classic line-up of Fender Rhodes/Hammond organ, piano (Billy Squire) electric guitar (Gianmarco Liguori), bass (Hayden Sinclair) and drums (Steven Tait) and is augmented with some freaky saxophone and flute from ex-Small Faces/Four Tops
hornsman Brian Smith and additional brass from Edwina Thorne.
